element14 has celebrated Earth Day, April 22, with the announcement of the Summer of Green Technology, a series of programs designed to help community members develop knowledge and skills in green technology. During the summer months, element14 will offer webinars, trainings, quizzes, and hands-on opportunities to experience and field test green electronics.

"We are extremely excited to be launching the Summer of Green Technology over the next four months, " said Dianne Kibbey, global community and social media manager for the element14 community. "Green technology is important to protect the environment, reduce emissions and mitigate or reverse the effects of human activity on our planet. The practice of designing environmentally responsible electronic products contributes to this mission, which we are proud to be a part of."

The program will conclude with the Summer of Green Technology Design Challenge, which gives engineers the opportunity to present their designs and compete for great prizes. The 25 selected challengers will receive a free kit including a Seeed development board, a Grove sensor kit and a Xiao breakout board to stimulate their creativity.

Using the Seeed Xiao sensor kit and a selection of sensors, they will need to create green projects and prototypes. Some examples of potential projects are:

  • A robot that removes waste from rivers
  • CO2 monitoring equipment
  • A device to help children recycle
  • A device to monitor the growth of CO2-consuming algae
  • An industrial IoT device that notifies operators of energy waste.

Participants must complete at least five blog posts by Aug. 30, 2023 to be eligible for the prizes up for grabs. The winner will receive a lightweight aluminum folding bicycle and an indoor IoT hydroponic herb garden. The runner-up will receive a portable battery with inverter and an indoor IoT hydroponic herb garden. Each challenger who completes five blog posts will receive a Duratool screwdriver as a final prize.

In addition to the design challenge, the Summer of Green Technology also features a number of unique hands-on activities, including webinars, RoadTest product reviews, technology insights, essential learning modules, quizzes, experimentation challenges and more.

To ensure that its members get the most out of these sessions, the element14 Community has partnered with green technology leaders, including Microchip, ADI, Bulgin, AMD, EAO Switches, Eaton, ST, Infineon, and others.

Topics covered in several webinars and events this summer include:

  • Energy harvesting
  • Green hydrogen
  • Low power
  • Energy efficiency
  • Solar and wind power
  • LED lighting
  • Smart buildings - IoT
  • Vertical farming
