Growth of 32 percent over 2021 and a turnover close to 2 billion euros: after every record, come the unknowns. The 2022 of the Italian electronic components distribution market, photographed by Assodel, ignites reflection on how the first half of the new year is going and what is to be expected in the near future. After all, Europe's Dmass also closed 2022 with the same percentage of growth, for a turnover close to 20 billion euros(ed. note: see, for both reports, the insights published in Elettronica AV #19).

Under decidedly complex supply chain circumstances, then, distribution companies seem to have held their own. Indeed, they have come to supply their customers with nearly 50 percent more components than they did two years ago, largely due to major evolution in processes, services and price competitiveness. "Most customers would be lost," Georg Steinberger writes in an earlier magazine article, "if distributors were unable to manage hundreds of supplier relationships for them, covering much of the working capital and transaction cost issues. A result that requires planning, expertise and solution orientation." Italian industry players, immersed in the ups and downs of pitfalls and opportunities, are aware of this.
What trends, expectations and fears
It was precisely the representatives of the main distributors operating in the country that we asked for comment on the current situation and on- developments in 2023. What led to last year's substantial growth? Is it a real increase in the volume of parts ordered, or did price increases play their part? Do you notice any backlog rescheduling activities by customers? What market, price and delivery trends do you anticipate for the current year? Finally, how concerned is the rising cost of money? A picture of light and shadow (many) emerges from the responses of Italian managers.
