The community element14, announced at electronica 2022 a new design challenge: It is called Save The Bees and aims to safeguard these insects essential to the global food chain, given that one in three bites of food is the result of bee pollination and that one in four bee species is at risk of extinction. The challenge is to develop solutions to eliminate some of the problems facing the global bee population.

How can electronics help achieve the goal? For example, with solutions designed to combat bee lice in beehives, such as the one conceived by Mayer Makes and demonstrated at electronica 2022 at the Farnell booth. "Saving bees has become a priority for many around the world, as it is for us at element14 Community," said Dianne Kibbey, Global Head of Community and Social Media at element14 Community. "We are excited to harness the creative minds of our community to create impactful solutions to the growing problem of pollinator extinction. The bee lice project is just one example of how innovative this community can be. We look forward to seeing the engineers at work as the challenge unfolds."

From the applicants, 25 challengers will be selected to receive the challenger kit that includes an Arduino Pro Nicla Vision board and an MKR1310 for LoRa connectivity. The challenge will begin with the announcement of participants on January 4, 2023, and projects and blog posts are due March 15, 2023. Winners will be announced by the end of March 2023.

The first prize includes a ViVi electric bicycle with an 80 km range worth 897 euros. The second prize includes a folding electric scooter worth $299. For the remaining 25 participants, the final prizes include a garden bee hotel worth $20.

Applications for the Save the Bees design challenge are open and will close on December 15, 2022. All information is available here.
