Milesight, is a brand distributed in Italy by. Celte, which makes ultrasonic distance/level sensors that can be used in a variety of smart city applications, from waste management to parking management. Milesight's solutions, leveraging LoRaWAN® technology, make it possible to set up a large network in an urban area: essential elements are the Milesight UG67 gateway and the EM310-UDL ultrasonic distance/level sensor, which can collect data from waste bins, parking lots, manholes and sewers. The information obtained from the data is thus used to efficiently manage resources and services. The sensor has compact size and wide measurement range and can be installed on any type of container to monitor the level or distance of solids or liquids.

Problems solved and services improved

In the smart city, efficient waste management is a crucial challenge to improve residents' living experience while reducing human effort, time and cost. The traditional way of manually monitoring containers and regularly collecting waste can be easily avoided with IoT technology. The Milesight ultrasonic distance/level sensor can be attached to the lid of the waste bin, which detects the status of the bin and notifies the garbage trucks when to collect because the bins are full. Real-time monitoring and history recording of all bins provides users with detailed information to better define waste collection schedules and collection route planning. The result is lower labor costs, fewer trucks needed, and lower fleet maintenance expenses.

Another critical issue present in cities: parking lots. Drivers spend an amount of time, effort, and fuel to find available parking spaces. How to help them find a free place to park in a shorter time? The Milesight ultrasonic distance/level sensor can be installed above the parking lot to detect whether it is occupied or free. Unlike magnetic parking sensors, which measure magnetic field strength and have low accuracy, ultrasonic sensors have high accuracy to avoid erroneous reports of vacancies. By taking advantage of a smart parking system, drivers can save search time, fuel consumption, and reduce car exhaust emissions.

Efficient monitoring of manholes is also essential for maintaining essential city services-telecommunications, water supply, gas and electricity, sewerage. Problems such as theft, unauthorized opening, and damage to manholes can result in fatalities such as falling or extensive damage to public property. The Milesight ultrasonic distance/level sensor can be attached to the underside of the cover. Integrated with a three-axis accelerometer and ultrasonic sensor, it can detect the manhole's status-open or closed-and send alerts of unexpected movement to prevent potential damage and loss.

Finally, let us not forget the problems associated with heavy rains that often cause flooding of streets and clogging of underground sewers, resulting in problems on urban road traffic and various inconveniences. In recent years, sewer inspection has mostly been done manually. But the cost of labor continues to increase and maintenance costs remain high. To reduce costs and the occurrence of problems, the Milesight ultrasonic distance/level sensor is the ideal choice in smart sewer applications to monitor water depth. Real-time measurements provide users with early warning to prevent blockage and overflow. Finally, the goals of high efficiency, good environmental maintenance, and low cost are achieved.
