Startcup Lombardia, the competition organised by Lombardy's Universities and University Incubators and promoted by Regione Lombardia - Direzione Generale Sviluppo Economico Assessore Guido Guidesi, with the coordination of PoliHub - Innovation Park & Startup Accelerator of the Politecnico di Milano, was presented these days.

Startcup Lombardia: a 20-year success story

Founded in 2003 on the initiative of the Politecnico di Milano, Startcup Lombardia celebrates its 20th edition this year. Since 2016, thanks also to the support of the Lombardy Region, the competition has awarded grants worth more than €600,000 and contributed to the birth of 31 companies that have raised more than €3 million in cumulative investments.
On the occasion of the initiative's 20th anniversary, Wise, a start-up from the University of Milan, winner of Startcup Lombardia in 2011 in the Life Sciences sector, was awarded "for having distinguished itself over the years in its growth path". WISE produces medical devices with a unique technology that enables the development of state-of-the-art implantable electrodes for neuromonitoring, neuromodulation and brain-machine interface. In 2020, it closed a Series C investment round of over EUR 15 million with CDP Venture Capital SGR as Lead Investor.

"Twenty years of ideas that reconfirm the enormous innovation capital of the Lombardy region. More than a fifth of Italian start-ups are located here, thanks also to a heritage of high education that takes shape within our universities through competitions such as the Startcup. However, the goal remains to look ahead, to the next twenty years, to the development of new areas of excellence, real innovation districts in collaboration with companies and public institutions. Our ability to generate critical mass and foster links with finance and the market will be crucial,' says Politecnico di Milano Rector Ferruccio Resta.

"Once again this year, in cooperation with the universities, we are promoting this competition with the aim of supporting and grounding innovative and winning ideas, transforming them into induced activity and job opportunities. We support with conviction those who have an idea and those who want to take up their challenge; the Region is and will always be at their side because Lombardy is the home of ideas,' says Lombardy Region Economic Development Councillor Guido Guidesi.

Startcup Lombardy: the participants

Aspiring entrepreneurs, working groups and established companies can apply to Startcup Lombardia.

Also for the 2022 edition, the Lombardy Region has renewed its support for the competition with a prize fund that rises to 150,000 euros for the best projects, nominated in four categories: ICT & Services, Industrial Technologies, Life Science & MedTech and CleanTech & Energy. There will be four winning projects, one per category, which will receive a contribution of 25 thousand euro each.

New for 2022 are the Special Prizes (which may be combined with the category prizes): Sustainability, awarded to the project that has a broad-based positive impact on environmental, social and economic issues, and Social Impact, awarded to the project that has a positive impact on society, people and communities. Both winners will receive a grant of EUR 25,000 each.
Finally, six Special Mentions will be awarded (to the four category winners, the winner of the Special Sustainability Award and one project among the finalists) that will receive direct access to the National Innovation Award (PNI).
