For the last two years, a real crisis has been underway. hardware component crisis. Due to the global pandemic and the resulting lockdowns, due to the difficulty in finding raw materials and due to growing demand, many companies are facing real difficulties in finding hardware components.

The industrial sector has experienced the uncertainty of material procurement. In addition, raw materials have reached significantly high cost levels, at one point turning components into rare and unavailable commodities. According to a report, published by Uptime InstituteAccording to a report, published by the European Commission, these problems could continue for the next two years and affect the supply of microchips and electronic components. However, the pandemic has taught the industry how to act quickly by devising new strategies based on a more elastic outlook and discovering new tools.

MAS Electronicsfor example, suffered the impact of the shortage, but learned from this experience how to react quickly. Sandro Mascetti, CEO of the Italian company, tells an anecdote about the period of uncertainty in the markets and explains how his company was able to react decisively to the challenges posed by the shortage. The winning moves were, in particular: making all customers aware of the long-term planning of production; flexibility in production, working on alternatives and when necessary modifying the boards to be able to produce by developing and adapting the software; close collaboration with manufacturers/partners, to shorten and make the decision-making process shorter and more efficient.

Working together, first of all

"The comparison with colleagues and other entities has been fundamental. We have strengthened our relationships with our players and customers in order to overcome together the obstacles that could have put projects and activities in difficulty," says Mascetti, focusing on how crucial it has been to have established strong ties with suppliers and customers over the years. "Having a strong relationship with our suppliers has allowed us to analyse the situation together and set things up in such a way as to fulfil our commitments to our customers. The relationship of trust between MAS Elettronica, its suppliers and its customers is a virtuous circle that has also turned into the vital energy that has kept our engines running even at times when the world was almost paralysed". The reactions to the situation and the actions taken were not always perfect, but they were effective and allowed the company to prepare its strategies in a much more resilient way. Mascetti goes on to say: 'Collaboration, teamwork, helping each other, are essential approaches that are often overshadowed by the 'panic' that arises when a deadline is missed. It'strue... Easier said than done, but in these situations you need a certain 'detachment' so that you can be calm and plan, plan, plan'.

The importance of custom design

Aiming at customisation could be the winning weapon, which is why in this delicate period companies must strive to find the right solution that aims at customised hardware design. Mascetti explains: "Adopting the custom hardware design approach is a good thing because any changes can be made during the design phase. In this day andage, when the availability of components is extremely volatile, the design must be adapted to this variable because it is the availability or otherwise of a component that dictates today. Once the availability of components has been established, it must be borne in mind that in order to design software that offers high performance, it must be built with hardware that can guarantee the best customer experience. The customised hardware of a system then requires several steps to arrive at a complete and optimal solution.

MAS Electronics and the future

2022 will be an important year for MAS Elettronica: "In order to continue our mission of technological innovation, we have set ourselves new and challenging goals, both at company and individual level, involving the whole team. In spite of the past period, which has been extremely complex, we have learnt a lesson that is invaluable for the company and that represents an incentive to face this moment of deep transformation even better. MAS Elettronica intends to expand and grow further by working proactively with strategic partners. In this regardwe are very open to receive new proposals from distributors, because MAS Elettronica is firmly convinced of the absolute value of collaborations and human values".
