The global semiconductor materials market grew 15.9% to $64.3 billion in revenues in 2021, surpassing the previous high of $55.5 billion reached in 2020. These are the figures compiled by Semi March.

Wafer making materials and packaging materials revenues in 2021 amounted to $40.4 billion and $23.9 billion respectively, with year-on-year increases of 15.5% and 16.5%. The silicon, wet chemicals, chemical-mechanical planarisation (CMP) and photomask segments showed the strongest growth in the wafer materials market, while the packaging materials market growth was largely driven by the organic substrates, leadframe and adhesive wire segments.

"The global semiconductor materials market has seen exceptional growth in 2021 due to strong demand for chips and expansion of the industry's manufacturing capacity," said Ajit Manocha, president and CEO of Semi.

For the 12th consecutive year, Taiwan, with US$14.7 billion, was the world's largest consumer of semiconductor materials due to its foundry capacity and advanced packaging base. China recorded the strongest year-on-year growth in 2021 placing second, while Korea remained the third largest consumer of semiconductor materials.
