RS Components has inaugurated the expansion of its distribution centre (DC) in Bad Hersfeld, Germany . RS has made a significant investment over the past two years to create one of the company's largest distribution centres in its global supply chain network, fully automated and equipped with state-of-the-art technology. At the opening event, customers and suppliers were able to see the highly automated inventory processing capability and warehouse management system now installed at the site.

Environmental aspects were a priority in this expansion project, which is why it was decided to equip the facility with a 6000 m² solar energy system and a green roof (sown with grass). In addition, the number of products stored for customers in continental Europe has almost tripled to around 500,000. This will not only contribute to a substantial reduction in the company's carbon footprint, but will also ensure the highest levels of service and delivery reliability to meet European and global demands.

Cutting-edge technologies

The distribution centre is equipped with a large computerised multi-shuttle system and a two-kilometre long conveyor system. The system is capable of handling 300,000 transport/storage containers that can be stored and retrieved at a rate of 9,000 containers per hour. Located in the heart of Europe, this state-of-the-art facility has been expanded by approximately 16,000 m² to create a storage area of around 37,000 m² in total. This allows additional space for a range of products and significantly increased stock levels, benefiting suppliers and customers with improved service and delivery. "As well as providing great benefits across our supply chain both in EMEA and globally, the technological innovations and increased storage capacity we have created through this expansion are a true reflection of the Group's commitment to our ESG goal of promoting sustainability," commented Debbie Lentz, President of Global Supply Chain at Electrocomponents Group, of which RS is a part. "A big thank you goes out to the project team and all employees at Bad Hersfeld for bringing this project to fruition, even in the face of unprecedented challenges caused by Covid-19."
