Positive sign for connector (and chip) sales

As of June 2021, sales of connectors are up 33% year-on-year and those of semiconductors 28.9%. Given the international scenario, it is expected that the two sectors will perform increasingly similarly to each other.

Semiconductor Industry Association reported June sales of $44.5 billion, up 28.9% year-on-year and 2.1% sequentially. Regionally, also for June, Sia reported that sales in the Americas grew 23.4% year-on-year, China 27.5%, Japan 20.7%, Asia Pacific 34.1% and Europe 42.3%. In Q2 2021, the increase compared to the same period last year was 29.2%. Significant numbers were also posted for connectors, with sales in the segment up 33% year-on-year in June. On a regional level, year-on-year sales increased by 26.6% in Japan, 39.9% in Asia Pacific, 45.6% in Europe, 23.6% in North America, 28% in China and 41.4% in the rest of the world. Figures for the second quarter of 2021 indicate a 42.5% year-on-year increase in sales.

Towards convergence

The sales performance for the connector sector has been better than that of semiconductors over the last eight months. It should be noted, however, that semiconductor sales did not decline at the beginning of 2020, as was the case for connectors. The convergence of sales trends, however, makes more sense for these two types of components, which are widely used in combination. Although the sales performance of connectors has outperformed that of semiconductors for the past eight consecutive months, sales trends for both components have been converging since the beginning of the year. Cases of Covid-19 have risen again in recent months in some countries such as India and Brazil, but worldwide the increase in industrial production has stimulated growing demand for semiconductors and other materials. This has resulted in a shortage of components and raw materials since early 2021. New Covid outbreaks in Asia Pacific could further exacerbate the semiconductor shortage, an issue that is expected to continue into the first quarter of 2022. Gartner will continue until the first quarter of 2022. As many countries have begun to revive their economies, we do not expect any significant setbacks in connector industry performance in the second half of 2021.
