Arrow Electronics e ROOQ, an innovator in sports measurement and analysis technology, have collaborated to create ROOQ BOX, a sensor technology that allows boxers to monitor and review their performance using data that was previously only available under laboratory conditions.

For the development of the system, ROOQ drew on a wide range of expertise from its team, which includes data, software, hardware and firmware specialists, scientists and mathematicians with specific sports expertise, as well as boxers and coaches. Arrow was instrumental in steering the project in the areas of firmware and hardware among component suppliers and in development and production services. In addition, the project benefited from the technical services of Arrow eInfochips. ROOQ Chief Sports Officer Henry Maske, who is an Olympic boxing champion, 1988 Seoul gold medalist and professional world champion from 1993 to 1996, said: "Arrow is a reliable, solution-oriented partner for us. We benefit from their immense experience and excellent global network".

The solution

ROOQ BOX comprises a pair of sensors to be worn in a belt on each wrist. The sensors record the movements made during the boxing activity. The data is then analysed in the relevant ROOQ app and in the cloud using machine learning algorithms to provide an accurate record of the session. Using this information, boxers and coaches can create a detailed picture of the training session, including the count of punches, their speed, variability and impact force. The algorithm has been trained to identify eight different types of punches and automatically classify them by filtering out specific, non-boxing related movements.

Until now, the data provided by this sensor technology was not accessible to athletes. Now it is an invaluable aid to help boxers monitor and improve their performance. This information can be shared with coaches.

"The success of this collaboration with ROOQ is a perfect example of how expert teams can join forces to overcome difficult business challenges together," emphasises Martin Bielesch, president of Arrow Components Business EMEA. "Arrow's technical and logistical services have enabled ROOQ to focus its core competencies to provide a completely new way of acquiring diagnostic data in boxing."

Other possible uses

Boxing is just the beginning. Training diagnostics technology can be applied universally. Ralf Rüttgers, founder and CEO of ROOQ, is convinced that the areas of application for ROOQ are manifold. He comments: "Further developments and transfers to the fitness market and other related sports as well as industrial applications are possible. Areas such as prevention, safety and health will play a role in our future training analysis."
