IoT slows down but does not slow down. PoliMi data

The 2020-2021 Research of the Internet of Things Observatory of the School of Management of the Politecnico di Milano indicates an Italian market that is holding up to the pandemic and stands at a value of €6 billion, marking a decline in line with the trend in the main Western countries.

by Virna Bottarelli | The IoT continues to be a 'fascinating and complex' topic. This is how Alessandro Perego, Scientific Director of the Digital Innovation Observatory of the Politecnico di Milanowho opened the conference presenting the latest edition of the IoT Observatory on 9 April.

"IoT implies not only a wide range of application areas, but also the need to work by adopting standards and integrating end-to-end processes," said Perego, recalling the ten years since the creation of the IoT Observatory and the progress made since 2011 by a technological paradigm that has gradually conquered the city, the home, the factory and the car.

"2020 was an important year for the Internet of Things in Italy," said Angela Tumino, Director of the Internet of Things Observatory. "The growth of the digital culture of enterprises has favoured the development of a greater awareness of the costs and benefits enabled by IoT technologies for citizens, companies and PA, in economic, environmental and risk reduction terms. These benefits highlight how IoT can play a key role in the country's digital transformation.

Slow growth for IoT over the past year

The pandemic has slowed down the progress of the Internet of Things, but has not seriously compromised the sector's performance: in the face of very rapid growth in recent years (+24% in 2019, +35% in 2018), the Italian market has in any case withstood the impact of the crisis, dropping by only 3%, in line with the trend recorded in the main Western countries (which fluctuates between -5% and +8%), and settling at a value of EUR 6 billion.

There are 93 million active IoT connections in Italy, of which 34 million are cellular connections (+10%) and 59 million enabled by other technologies (+15%). Among these, LpWan (Low Power Wide Area Network) networks stand out, reaching for the first time one million connections (+100%). A strong push also comes from the component of services connected to connected objects, with a value of 2.4 billion euros and a growth of 4%, in contrast with the general market trend. "The emergency has not made it possible to replicate in 2020 the high pace of growth held by the IoT market in recent years, " says Giulio Salvadori, Director of the Observatory. "But, although slightly down, the market is still healthy and shows a good dynamism, with many areas that have grown compared to 2019, such as Smart Agriculture, Smart Factory, Smart Logistics and Smart City. IoT connections enabling technological evolution, from new platforms to edge computing, are steadily increasing, and the push for services enabled by smart objects opens up new business models and opportunities, both from a consumer, enterprise and PA perspective."
