Molex has published the results of The State of 5G Global Survey among telecommunications operator decision-makers on the state of 5G, the transformational opportunities offered by this technology, its impact and emerging business prospects.

Molex commissioned the survey to Dimensional Research in February 2021. There were more than 200 respondents, qualified professionals in engineering, product and R&D roles at network operators or mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs). More than half of the respondents reported delays in 5G deployment caused by the impact of COVID-19, while more than a third reported delays in future roadmaps.

More than half of the respondents expect to deliver substantial benefits to end users within 2-5 years, while 47% reported that users are already seeing value or will do so within a year.

Over 50% of the audience said that consumers in Japan and Korea already recognise a substantial benefit from 5G. China also continues to gain ground with more than half of respondents indicating that consumers are benefiting currently (24%) or are expected to benefit within a year (27%). According to the survey, expectations for the US are that it will take two to five years (75%) for consumers to fully realise significant benefits nationwide.

"The 5G market is approaching a tipping point as players report steady progress despite ongoing challenges," said Aldo Lopez, president, Datacom Solutions, Molex. "Fully realising the potential of 5G will transform multiple industries and markets. It's a long game, requiring an entire ecosystem of hardware, software and connectivity companies to work together to innovate according to these new mobile network standards, which in turn will accelerate user adoption."

When asked to identify the most important technology or industry change that will enable network operators to achieve their business goals, respondents cited reduced costs of 5G infrastructure and network equipment (41%); innovation in enabling technologies, including semiconductors and sensors (31%); availability of new types of devices that require connectivity (26%); as well as stable and consistent government regulations (22%).
