According to data released by ANIEIstatthe Italian technology industry - Electrotechnics and Electronics - represented by ANIE Federation closes 2020 with a cumulative decrease in the levels of industrial activity of 9.6% (-12.1% the corresponding variation recorded by the manufacturing sector): this is the second worst result in the last twenty years after the collapse recorded in 2009. The marked decline is shared by the two macro areas of Electrotechnics (-8.9%) and Electronics (-13.3%).

Giuliano Busetto, President of Anie, comments: "The gradual recovery in the last quarter of the year did not compensate for the losses in industrial activity levels in the first part of the year. -10.9% in the January-March period and -26.4% in the following quarter represent the most obvious consequence of the spring lockdown that halted activities with the sole exception of essential ones".

Looking at the month of December 2020 alone - in comparison with the month of December 2019 - there is a trend of a positive sign (+5.3%), a recovery that should also be confirmed in the month of January 2021, based on an order book that in the last quarter of 2020 reduced the rate of fall of the previous months. "However, the dynamics of the ANIE sectors remain strongly linked to an economic context of great uncertainty and highly dependent on the evolution of the pandemic."

The manufacturing industry will continue to represent a pillar of the recovery on which to focus with a rapid and effective implementation of the Transition 4.0 plan: in a new and strategic vision of industrial policy, the technology sectors can offer a fundamental contribution to the achievement of the ambitious goals of ecological and digital transition.
