Barry Dowdy, Security Systems Manager for Aerospace and Defense Solutions at. Analog Devicestalks about developments in defense electronics and, in particular, in communications systems consisting of tactical voice and mission-critical command and control links that save lives by providing environmental monitoring to military personnel in the field, while accurately commanding and controlling the destination of various air and ground platforms.

"The priorities of system integrators and OEMs demanding embedded security solutions for mission-critical communications systems are ease of use and integration, reduced size, weight and power (SWaP) and rapid time-to-market," says Dowdy, describing how Analog Devices' electronics meet these requirements in military radio communications and automated systems, namely unmanned aerial systems (UAS), robots and autonomous tactical vehicles.

"One of our solutions that ensures secure communications and reduces SWaP and Time to Market is the Sypher Ultra platform, which facilitates the implementation of security features in the Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ family of Fpga. Sypher Ultra's security features include boot, update, key save, data in motion (traffic encryption) and secure data at rest. These features isolate sensitive cryptographic operations, protect IP and communications, manage device identity, and enable secure distribution of software updates. These features are also usable by non-security experts, who can make use of reference design software/firmware, an API, a GUI (Graphical User Interface) and appropriate documentation."
