Ammagamma: we are not just numbers

Advanced mathematics and a humanistic approach are the cornerstones of Ammagamma, an innovative SME that helps companies to be more efficient and sustainable with solutions capable of transforming numbers into knowledge.

It was 2013 when Fabio Ferrari, an engineer and PhD, decided to found a company that offers advanced mathematical solutions to guide companies towards new social and sustainable production visions. This is how Energy Way was born in Modena, a company that, through the application of innovative solutions, transforms numbers into knowledge and supports its clients in optimizing processes and resources, reaching new levels of efficiency and sustainability. Today that company is Ammagamma. "Energy optimization was the original focus of our company," explains David Bevilacqua, CEO of Ammagamma. "In just a few years, however, we have expanded our activities and developed cross-sector solutions for company processes, in all the main markets, from the automotive sector to large-scale distribution, from multi-utilities to banks. An important transformation that could not but involve the original name of the company, which gradually became less and less representative of this important growth and evolution of the company" . Today 60 people work at Ammagamma. In 2019, revenues exceeded 3 million euros and the company's clients include, in addition to SMEs in the manufacturing sector, names of the calibre of Gruppo Hera, Unipol, Barilla, TIM and Poste Italiane.

When did you "stop" being a start-up? And what did you become?

Thanks to the work of an exceptional team, we have grown a lot in recent years and in 2018 we officially went from start-up to innovative SME. Over time, our staff has grown and our activities have also changed a lot: they have progressively expanded, although the original approach to innovation, marked by experimentation and interdisciplinary contamination, has remained strong in us. Over the years, the work of our experts has received important recognition in Italy and abroad: the Ministry of Education has recognized Ammagamma as an "accredited research organization, specialized in Data Science". This year we became official partners of Stanford University and members of the Focus Group on AI of the European Digital SME Alliance. Last September 22, we entered the Top Startups ranking of LinkedIn Italy 2020, as one of the ten most resilient companies in Italy: during the pandemic period, we were able to continue to attract investments, employees and interest.

Give us your definition of Data science and Artificial Intelligence, the technologies on which your activity is focused?

Data science and artificial intelligence are nothing more than tools at the service of man. By analysing data and studying the correlations between the variables that influence phenomena of complex interpretation, we transform numbers into knowledge to help companies evolve and define new innovation strategies . The disruptive development of these advanced technologies is radically transforming our ability to interpret and understand the reality in which we live. We want to exploit these resources by placing human awareness at the center of this transformation process, perfected and enhanced by mathematics, as a tool for generating new visions and new opportunities for social development. With our data-driven approach, we help our customers achieve new levels of efficiency and sustainability that benefit society and the planet, while respecting the Sustainable Development Goals.

And your own definition of "innovation"?

Innovation is an integral part of a company's growth and development strategies. Mathematics and technology are important tools available to those who want to innovate, but without man, without his rationality and sensitivity, it is not possible to really innovate. Our team has always included developers, philosophers, scientists and creatives, because innovation also means thinking out of the box, mixing points of view and methodologies in an interdisciplinary way, to build value together, with responsibility. And it is precisely this vision of ours, strongly centered on the principle of responsibility, that led us to create and promote the "Manifesto of Sensible Rationality", our proposal for a humanistic conception of artificial intelligence, which we published last year: today more than ever we all have the opportunity to face today's great challenges using powerful tools, based on mathematics, but to do so we must identify the right objectives to pursue and take responsibility for our choices.

Give us an example of mathematics applied to business processes?

It is potentially possible to apply mathematics to all business processes. In the automotive industry, for example, we apply an Image Analysis solution to increase the level of effectiveness of quality control: in this way we help operators to automatically identify alterations in the texture of cars, indicative of possible defects in their structure and paint. For production processes in the manufacturing industry, we offer optimized planning solutions to make production lines more efficient, reduce factory downtime and minimize raw material waste.
