STMicroelectronics has announced the acquisition of Somos Semiconductor, a French fabless semiconductor company founded in 2018 and specialising in silicon-based power amplifiers and Radio Frequency front-end (Fem) modules.

Somos' technology and assets will support the development of ST's existing roadmap for RF front-end modules for the 5G infrastructure market.

Claude Dardanne, President of STMicroelectronics ' Microcontrollers and Digital Integrated Circuits group, commented:"Consumers and industry expect better, broader and higher quality connectivity solutions. At ST, we are working to offer and enable solutions that address these needs and challenges. IoT and 5G cellular infrastructure technologies represent a key element in this perspective. With this acquisition, we confirm our ambition to play a leading role in RF FEMs to strongly drive the IoT connectivity market, as well as reinforce our RF front-end roadmap for 5G markets."

The acquisition of Somos follows those of BeSpoon for UWB technology and Riot Micro for NB-IoT modems, again with a view to enhancing connectivity and leveraging the company's leading position in the market for STM32 solutions and ecosystem.
