The effective date of the IEC/EN 62368-1 safety standard is approaching. The new IEC/EN 62368-1 standard brings together two worlds, ICT and Audio & Video, which until now have been covered by IEC/EN 60065 and IEC/EN 60950-1. The replacement of the two standards will take place on 20 December 2020 in most markets, and IEC/EN 62368-1 will come into force on the same day. However, the adoption time for the new standard varies from market to market. So if you plan to sell a product in multiple markets, it is essential to understand which standard the target countries are basing their products on. IEC/EN 62368-1 covers IT / AV equipment, which means that all products that until now have been considered covered by IEC/EN 60950-1 and IEC/EN 60065 will be involved and therefore covered by the standard. The new standard also considers the subgroups of the main products, including: cables, adapters, power supplies etc. The IEC/EN 62368-1 safety standard uses new performance and construction requirements, which take into account energy sources, protections and intended users. This means that products that meet IEC/EN 60950-1 and IEC/EN 60065 do not automatically meet the requirements of the new safety standard.

As the replacement date approaches in Europe, it is vital that IT and Audio & Video equipment manufacturers develop a proactive plan to ensure that their products remain compliant and sellable in the markets of interest.
