With the Small Multiple Connector family, introduced in the late 1990s, Erni was the first company to develop a miniature connector system with a pure SMT termination method. Over the years, the Swiss company's offering has expanded to include female and male connectors (straight and angled), with different heights and from 12 to 80 pins.
Smc connectors are used in PLCs, inverters, battery management systems, remote I/Os, frequency converters, controls for solar systems etc. The main reasons for their success are flexibility, the space-saving pitch of 1.27 mm, the reliability of the contact, with the proven double-beam female contact, and of the mating, thanks to the polarization and the entry chamfers. All this combined with production quality despite miniaturisation. Erni's Smc portfolio also fits the requirements for high data rates, higher pin counts and higher contact density.
Features of Smc connectors
- The optimized contact design has an almost continuous impedance curve and allows safe (differential) transmission of data rates up to 3 Gbit/s.
- To meet industrial vibration and shock requirements, the two-sided contact (with vibration/shock tests up to 20 g / 50 g) was designed with an all-metal Smt bracket that also absorbs the high insertion and withdrawal forces.
- The small pitch and numerous connector designs enable miniature applications with optimal use of installation space.
- Contact reliability in combination with a high center and angular offset, as well as protection against mismating (min. 2.5 mm), reduce field failures.
- The tolerance compensation of the SMC contact system allows the different arrangement of several SMC connectors (clusters) on a board (up to 24 connectors simultaneously).
- The connectors are available in various heights, thanks to which mezzanine distances of 8 to 20 mm can be achieved. With board-to-board adapters, the distances can also be increased up to 40 mm.
- Other features to note are: fully automatic assembly, fully protected male contacts, solid solder clips to absorb sealing forces, selective gold plating on contact surfaces and fully coated contacts (no surface diffusion or corrosion).
