Farnell IoT survey

Farnell announces the launch of its third annual survey of theIoT. The survey is a unique opportunity for designers and engineers involved in creating Internet of Things (IoT) and industrial IoT projects to share their recent experiences in the marketplace, helping to produce a range of products and technical resources offered by Farnell to support this diverse and ever-expanding technology.

The survey is online from 15 September to 1 December 2020 and the results will be announced in spring 2021. All respondents will be able to participate in a competition with a chance to win:

  • An 11-inch iPad Pro
  • A £250 Amazon gift voucher (or equivalent in local currency)
  • A £50 Amazon gift voucher (or equivalent in local currency)

Farnell survey topics

Farnell's annual 2020 IoT survey is open to designers working on IoT solutions. This year's questions have been improved to allow for a deeper dive into the IoT industry and the answers will provide a greater understanding of the technologies, challenges and opportunities facing IoT solution designers. The results will show how the IoT industry is changing year on year, revealing the full range of potential applications and market trends, and how the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the design process is growing. Understanding the impact of COVID-19 on IoT developments is another key objective. While industrial systems may be negatively affected by the pandemic, it is indeed likely that medical diagnosis and automated testing systems will experience rapid growth.

The key results of the 2019 survey showed the increasing role of hardware in the design process of IoT solutions. Designers said they use a wide range of off-the-shelf hardware platforms to accelerate development speed and reduce time to market. 54% of developers confirmed that they now use single-board computers, from brands such as Raspberry Pi or Arduino, as they provide ready-to-use embedded development platforms for creating finished products. Almost half of the respondents said they used AI in their projects in 2019. Interoperability and certification of compliance with standards were identified as factors in accelerating the benefits of IoT in both the surveys of 2018 and 2019 surveys.

Why an IoT survey

Farnell's research also suggests that opportunities within the IoT will continue to grow over the next five years with key application areas expected to include home automation, industrial automation and control, as well as smart factories and buildings. Cliff Ortmeyer, Global Head of Technical Marketing at Farnell, said, "IoT continues to be one of the most important global technology trends and the opportunities are growing exponentially in our rapidly evolving market. The results of our annual global survey will provide designers working in the IoT with a greater understanding of the technology solutions currently available in the market, and support effective decision making in identifying new systems and overcoming common problems. The responses will also help define the range of products and technical resources Farnell offers, enabling us to provide greater support to our customers. Our annual IoT survey gives designers around the world the opportunity to highlight the trends they identify in the IoT space, as well as the challenges they face and the solutions they seek."

Farnell provides access to a wide range of development tools for IoT and works with innovative vendors to provide the latest solutions in AI and security. Users can find resources for support and design, in the IoT Hub, in the AI section and via the AI Configurator on the Farnell website. Same-day shipping is available for all major IoT development boards, including the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B computer, Avnet SmartEdge IIoT Gateway, Microsoft Azure Sphere starter kit, BeagleBone AI and Ultra96 V2.
