congatec has expanded its series of TR-4 conga modules in COM Express format with new models equipped with processors from AMD's new Ryzen Embedded R1000 series.

Based on the Zen microarchitecture, these next-generation processors feature a scaled-down feature set compared to AMD's Ryzen V1000 processors, while still delivering impressive features including 2 multi-threaded cores and support for three 4K resolution displays with AMD's Radeon Vega GPU featuring three Compute Units (CUs).

Featuring a scalable TDP from 24 to 12 W and CPU clock frequencies of up to 3.5 GHz, these processors provide all the power needed for single-threaded processing. With even higher graphics performance, the new modules are targeted at applications where OEMs want to emphasise the quality of their products with compelling graphics.

The main markets for these modules include:

  • graphics-intensive multi-display systems used for gaming
  • digital signage
  • industrial visualisation
  • industrial automation
  • headless systems (i.e. without a graphical user interface) where the GPU is used for highly parallel data processing.

The main features

congatec's new COM Express modules are based on the latest AMD Ryzen Embedded R1505G and R1606G multi-core SoCs. They support up to 32 GB of dual channel DDR4 memory, capable of operating at a maximum data transfer rate of 2400 MT/ with optional ECC for maximum data protection. The integrated AMD Radeon Vega GPU with 3 CUs (Compute Units) supports up to 3 independent displays with UHD (4K) resolution and 10-bit HDR, plus DirectX and OpenGL 4.4 for 3D graphics. The integrated video engine enables hardware-accelerated streaming of HEVC video in both directions. With support for HSA and OpenCL 2.0 application workloads deep learning can be assigned to the GPU. For security-critical applications AMD's integrated secure processor can perform hardware-accelerated encryption and decryption of RSA, SHA and AES algorithms.

The new conga-TR4 enables a full USB-C implementation on the carrier board with support for USB 3.1 Gen2 (with transfer rates of 10 Gb/s), PD (Power Delivery) functionality and Display Port 1.4 so that external touch screens, for example, can be connected via a single cable. Other performance-enhancing interfaces include a PEG 3.0 x4 port, 3 PCIe Gen3 and 4 PCIe Gen2, 3 USB 3.1 Gen2, 1 USB 3.1 Gen1, 8 USB 2.0, 2 SATA Gen 3 and a Gigabit Ethernet port. I/Os for SD, SPI, LPC, I2C, as well as 2 legacy UARTs from the CPU and HD audio complete the interface package. Supported operating systems are Linux, Yocto 2.0 and Microsoft Windows 10 (Windows 7 optional).
