STMicroelectronics is fuelling the process of change towards smart agriculture with its solutions. "The business of technology solutions for agriculture will triple by 2025," reports ST's blog, 'Nuggets'.
The company has a working group dedicated to the development of prototype demos that can be applied in Intelligent Agriculture, a market that will develop as solutions become increasingly user-friendly and low cost.
ST products that are widely used in this field include: Mems, motion and environmental sensors, connectivity, positioning and microcontrollers of the STM32 family, which can form the basis of complete Agrifood and Asset Tracking systems. With these sensors it is possible to capture all the parameters that are useful for the correct growth of plants in a greenhouse: humidity, pressure, temperature, lighting, etc.
The values are transferred wirelessly to the cloud, where automated strategies for proper cultivation are developed (automatic water and fertiliser supply, increasing or decreasing light and temperature, etc.).
Asset tracking from greenhouse to food transport
Plant care is not the only area in which ST solutions find application: in livestock management, for example, in the form of SubGHz LoRA smart tags, they collect information on the positioning and state of health of livestock; in the food chain, on the other hand, sensor tags with NFC or Bluetooth connectivity can be used to provide information on how food is stored and transported.
