Murata has announced the development of the smallest Multilayer Ceramic Capacitor (Mlcc) with capacitance values of 1 μF in 0402M (01005") size, measuring 0.4x 0.2×0.2 mm. The GRM022R60G105ME01 model with a nominal voltage of 4 Vdc is already in mass production, while production of the GRM022R60J105M model, with a nominal voltage of 6.3 Vdc, will start in 2021.

The characteristics of the new Murata Mlcc

Mlcc capacitors with a capacitance of 1 μF are widely used in a large number of electronic devices, with around 1,100 capacitors installed in a single smartphone. These new components have been developed to meet the demand for smaller, thinner and more sophisticated mobile electronic devices such as smartphones and wearables. Murata's thin-film technology for ceramic elements and its thin-film process, also a result of the company's research, have contributed to a 35 per cent and 50 per cent reduction in footprint and volume respectively compared to Murata's existing products at the same capacity value. As Takanori Hibino, Capacitors Product Manager at Murata Europe, points out: "Our proprietary thin-film process has enabled us to further reduce the size of our MLCC capacitors.
