From Rohm, 4-channel linear LED drivers for automotive applications

Rohm has developed an integrated circuit for 4-channel linear LED drivers with integrated mosfet, ideal for automotive LED rear lights (direction/stop indicators), fog lights and direction indicators.

The adoption of LED lamps for the automotive sector is increasing, and vehicle manufacturers are demanding simpler circuits for rear lights and number plate lights. To meet this market demand, Rohm Rohm has developed its latest generation of LED drivers , the BD183x7EFV-M series (BD18337EFV-M / BD18347EFV-M), which incorporate a proprietary thermal dissipation circuit and an individual LED control function.

Driver characteristics

The heat distribution circuit merges the heat sink terminals into one to achieve a higher output power (150 mA/channel) in a compact 16-pin package, while increasing the maximum number of channels to 4. Conventional vehicle tail light systems require 2 drivers to power 4 LED strings. Rohm's new ICs enable all four strings to be driven by a single driver, thereby significantly reducing both the number of components and the mounting area.

The Rohm solution incorporates an individual LED control function that can simultaneously drive two different types of LEDs, minimising the board area by halving the number of ICs compared to existing systems that require two ICs to drive the same number of LEDs. The integrated control function allows the user to select Off either collectively or individually, should a rear light fail to illuminate. Designers can select Off for all LEDs or just for the faulty string, thus introducing uniformity to multi-regional standards with a single setting and considerably reducing the number of man-hours spent on redesign.

Thanks to the addition of external resistors, it is also possible to have an individual dimming function for sequential lighting.

Finally, open/short circuit detection for vehicle lamps, fault detection for each channel and other protection functions prevent damage to the circuit, LED driver and peripherals.
