Covid-19 and the economy: Anie calls for extraordinary measures to guarantee liquidity

The lockdown established to deal with the Covid-19 emergency involves 80% of electrotechnical and electronic companies, which generate 73% of the sector's aggregate turnover. In the light of the drop in orders since the beginning of March, Anie is calling for extraordinary measures to guarantee liquidity now and facilitate the restart later.

Giuliano Busetto, President of Anie, assessing the economic repercussions of the Covid-19 emergency on companies in the sector represented by the Federation, said that there had already been a "drastic slowdown in orders"since the beginning of March.

An in-depth study by Centro Studi Confindustria shows that 70% of the electrical and electronic companies in the survey sample recorded a negative effect on business activity and a significant impact on the acquisition of production inputs and on demand . The Centro Studi Confindustria also forecasts a cumulative fall in GDP of around 10% for the first half of 2020.

A report drawn up by the Anie Studies Department based on ISTAT data shows that lockdown (the suspension of all non-essential industrial and commercial activities established by the Prime Ministerial Decree of 22 March 2020 and the Legislative Decree of 25 March 2020) involves 80% of the companies in the sector, with 73% of aggregate turnover and 76% of employees .

Federazione Anie, with over 1,400 member companies and around 500,000 employees, produces an aggregate turnover of EUR 80 billion.

Busetto asks the government for a more constant dialogue with the Federation and does not fail to point out that Anie companies can, better than others, help to understand how supply chains are really structured: they are in fact suppliers of the technologies needed by the sectors of the specific production and distribution chains for Industry, Energy, Transport and Public and Private Infrastructure.

In a letter sent to the government, the Anie president has already pointed out the difficulty in finding equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) and asked for a simplified procurement procedure to allow companies to continue their activities and services safely, ensuring the health protection of all workers. "It is important to maintain operations in the immediate future and, at a later stage, to restart full operations in order to revive industrial productivity in our country," Busetto said. It is equally important to provide financial support for all companies, large, medium and small: "Our companies represent the excellence of suppliers of technological systems and solutions for Made in Italy and, to prevent companies from not being able to reopen once the crisis is over, we need extraordinary measures to guarantee liquidity. From the immediate suspension of tax and contribution payments to the strengthening of the Guarantee Fund to support SMEs and Mid Caps".
