The Smart Home market will account for over 13% of Bluetooth device shipments by 2024, equivalent to over 815 million Bluetooth-enabled products, according to consultancy Abi Research.
Bluetooth opportunities
In fact, the tremendous growth of a wide range of devices, including smart lighting, voice control, home appliances and smart sensors, that support Bluetooth is propelling a market valued at 250 million units globally by 2019 to become one of the largest market opportunities for Bluetooth over the next five years.
Bluetooth, thanks to its advantages in terms of low power consumption, audio capability, presence in mobile devices and mesh network support, is indeed the technology best positioned to exploit the opportunities coming from the Smart Home.
Wi-Fi, 802.15.4 and Z-Wave
However, it's not just Bluetooth that will benefit from this huge increase in connected home devices. In fact, Wi-Fi, 802.15.4 and Z-Wave based smart home products are also expected to see an interesting growth trend between now and 2024.
Worthy of note in the area of Smart Home, smart lighting devices will exceed the barrier of 300 million units sold by 2024; 60% of these will be based on 802.15.4 technology. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi will represent 30% and 8% respectively.
Smart Home players
Similarly, Wi-Fi will be almost ubiquitous in smart appliances along with Bluetooth, while 802.15.4 and Z-Wave will gain points in low-power sensors. Players in the smart home solutions market include Nordic, Dialog, Cypress (recently acquired by Infineon), Silicon Labs, Nxp, Microchip, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments, Redpine Signals, ON Semiconductor and u-blox.
